Course Objectives

The principal objective of the course is to provide mid-career planners with requisite knowledge and skills in formulating and implementing effective local/regional development policies and plans. The course seeks:

  • To strengthen the institutional capacity of African countries for regional planning by training planners working with governments and other relevant organizations in effective skills and approaches for local and regional development planning and management;
  • To create a forum for the African planners to exchange views on intra and inter-country experiences, draw useful lessons and promote network building;
  • To expose participants to real life undertaking by communities and institutions in responding to the challenges of development by carrying out field studies of projects and programmes in the rural and urban sectors;
  • To enhance the capacity of training and research institutions in Africa by involving them in preparation of training materials and delivery of the training modules; and
  • To provide the participants with the skills and methodologies of training of trainers (TOT), with alumni serving as resource persons, to organize and deliver local in-country training programmes, upon their return home, reaching a much larger constituency, in collaboration with UNCRD and local development agencies.
