The Seventh Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters (8 July 2025, New York)

Date

29/06/2025

The United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) will co-organize "The Seventh Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters" in New York, together with the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Netherlands, Slovenia, and Tajikistan; the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of the Government of Japan; the High-Level Panel on Water and Disaster (HELP); and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) of Japan.

The UN Special Thematic Sessions on Water and Disasters (STSWD) have been held biennially since 2013. The STSWD7 will focus on the theme "Water and Disasters for Cooperation and Partnerships," and will take place as part of the lead-up to the 2026 UN Water Conference. It will build on the discussions and outcomes of the 2023 UN Water Conference while continuing its mission to raise awareness, foster cooperation, and drive action on water and disaster-related issues within the broader development agenda. The STSWD7 will build on previous sessions by maintaining high-level political engagement and advocating for concrete action to address the interlinked challenges of water and disaster risk reduction among UN member states. The outcomes of the session will feed into global dialogues such as the Dushanbe Process and the UN Water Conferences in 2026 and 2028. Together, these discussions will help forge stronger partnerships among water stakeholders, advancing the shared goal of peace and sustainable water management.
