The United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) supported Tianjin University of Commerce, Nanchang University, Tianjin University, Nanchang Hangkong University, Tianjin Key Lab of Biomass/ Waste utilization, Tianjin Engineering Research Center for Organic Wastes Safe Disposal and Energy Utilization, China-Australia Center for Sustainable Urban Development, Tianjin Biomass Energy Environment International Joint Research Center, China-Australia Research Center on Building Environment and Energy Efficiency, TJCU Sino-Indonesia Joint Research Center for Biomass Energy and Environment, Tianjin Engineering Center of Biomass-derived Gas and Oil in co-organizing of the 4th International Symposium on Biomass/Waste Energy and Environment (BEE 2023) held in Nanchang, PR China from 20 to 23 September 2023. The theme of the symposium is to promote exploring the synergy between biomass/waste energy utilization and carbon/hazardous pollutant emissions reduction, biomass/waste energy technology, process modeling and simulation, environmental and carbon emissions issues and policy development and future perspectives of biomass/wastes energy and environment. The conference focuses on sustainability, particularly bioenergy and low carbon fuels, evaluating the environmental, economic and social consequences of implementation pathways. Approximately 400 participants from 16 countries comprising of academia, NGOs, government officials, private sectors, UN, and international organizations participated in this conference. UNCRD participated in the technical tour ‘Microalgae Carbon neutralization Research Base of Nanchang University’, this research base integrates the process of breeding, cultivation, CO2 fixation, and microalgae harvesting. UNCRD delivered a keynote presentation on "Potential of circular economy and bio energy ‘bioeconomy’ toward carbon-neutral and SDGs” and received an award at the conference. UNCRD chaired a session on Biomass/wastes to energy technology at the conference. UNCRD participated in the Scientific committee meeting discussed the substantive overview of the conference and future development of biomass energy technologies in this bi-annual conference. Furthermore, UNCRD had discussion with the host and co-organizers regarding the preparation of the draft of new declaration on 3R and Circular Economy – Sustainable 3R and Circular Economy Goals for Achieving Resource Efficient, Clean, Resilient, Sound Material Cycle and Low-Carbon Society in Asia and the Pacific (2024-2034). The co-organizers expressed their interest to contribute the draft of new declaration and to participate in the upcoming 11th Regional 3R and Circular Forum in Asia and the Pacific in Vietnam 2024.
