Background
Due to hostile environment, choices for opportunities for creation of sustainable livelihoods in Dadaab refugee camp in Northern Kenya are highly limited. Located in an underdeveloped area of Kenya, the camp suffers from a high level of human insecurity, drought, conflict and a population having a low literacy level. The well-being of the local community and refugees are to a large extent similarly adversely affected by lack of knowledge and skills and the majority live below poverty line. To impart skills for alternative livelihood creation, UNCRD in partnership with International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized a Youth Training Workshop for Capacity Building on Enhanced Knowledge in Small Computers Business Skills and Conflict Management from 24th to 26th January 2013, in Dadaab, Northern Kenya.
Key Outputs of the Training Workshop
- Refugee and host community youth trained in income generating small computer businesses, group initiatives and teamwork
- Requisite knowledge imparted to the youth on strategies for sustainability of small computer businesses as an alternative means of livelihoods
- Causes and effects of conflict affecting youth identified as a decisive move towards youth empowerment
- Youth in host community and among refugees embrace mutual understanding and harmony as a prerequisite for peace and sustainable development
