The IPLA event, International Dialogue on Solid Waste Management Towards Zero Waste, was co-organized by UAESP, Bogota (United Administrative Especial de Servicios Publicos) and Office of Mayor of Bogota City from 26 to 27 March 2015 in Bogota, Colombia.

   

The Dialogue, which was attended by more than 300 participants from several Latin American countries, addressed a number of areas such as policies and programmes to achieve zero waste cities, financing waste management and sanitation system, waste management strategies during natural disaster and catastrophic events, social inclusion in waste management, technologies and their adaptation, and waste management in the context of climate mitigation and post-2015 development, among others.

The meeting urged implementing necessary policy measures to promote waste management as an economic industry with strong partnerships with private sector and waste entrepreneurs in Latin American region. UNCRD provides global coordination support for the International Partnership for Expanding Waste Management Services of Local Authorities (IPLA) - a Rio+20 partnership, which has currently more than 240 registered members and partners from 70 countries around the world. As an IPLA sub-regional secretariat for Northern Latin American region, UAESP-Bogota has put up remarkable efforts to promote IPLA objectives in Colombia as well as other Latin American countries. IPLA has not only played a catalytic role to influence the Latin American countries to bring changes in the way they govern and implement waste management, it has also been instrumental in promoting "regional cooperation" in Latin America in the areas of waste management.
