Course Objectives

The course objectives are:

  • To strengthen the institutional capacity of African countries for regional planning by training planners working with governments and other relevant organizations in effective skills and approaches for local and regional development planning and management;
  • To create a forum for African planners to exchange views on intra- and inter-country experiences, draw useful lessons and promote network building;
  • To expose participants to real life undertakings by communities and institutions in responding to the challenges of development by undertaking field studies of projects and programmes in the rural and urban sectors;
  • To enhance the capacity of training and research institutions in Africa by involving them in preparation of training materials and delivery of training modules; and
  • To provide the participants with skills and methodologies of training of trainers (TOT), with alumni serving as resource persons, to organize and deliver local in-country training programmes, upon their return home, reaching a much larger constituency, in collaboration with UNCRD and local development agencies.
