Poverty reduction is a primary and ultimate goal of the international community as is expressed in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Many African countries have embarked on sustainable regional development policies to reduce poverty through equitable distribution of resources, improved delivery of public services to communities, and increased citizen participation in project identification, effective planning, and implementation and ultimately achieving sustainable development. This panel will examine and discuss how much success and good results have been achieved. Based on the case studies and experiences of three African countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, and Kenya), the panel will also address the challenges and opportunities of sustainable regional development in Africa.
