Dates: 27-28 November 2003
Place: Nyahururu, Kenya
Background
The broad objectives of the workshop are to: (a) discuss implementation of Nyandarua district regional development plan; (b) exchange experiences gained and lessons learnt from Nyandarua capacity building programme; (c) identify and discuss follow-up activities and; (d) identify possible district(s) where the Nyandarua experience could be replicated. Already, the Physical Planning Department has requested UNCRD Africa Office to explore the possibilities of replicating the programme in a district to be selected in the semi-arid region. Unlike Nyandarua which is in a highland region, districts in the semi-arid region of Kenya are facing daunting challenges pertaining to resource development and environmental management.
Specific Objectives
- To provide a suitable forum for the residents to collectively receive and discuss the Nyandarua District Regional Development Plan as a legitimate plan document containing their inputs on regional policies, strategies and development programmes;
- To discuss implementation modalities of Nyandarua District Regional Development Plan;
- To train planners in regional plan implementation and in the documentation of planning experiences;
- To increase the number of planners trained in stakeholder-consultation and partnership-building for regional development planning and plan preparation;
- To identify and discuss follow-up activities during the implementation phase of the plan;
- To discuss experiences gained from Nyandarua and identify district(s) where the experiences could be replicated;
- To discuss lessons learnt in Nyandarua and how they might be utilized in replicating the experiences gained; and
- To institutionalize the newly prepared regional development plan among the participants, stakeholders and other interested actors
