Pre-event of the 12th Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum in Asia and the Pacific, The 18th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology, 20-23 May 2023

The United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) supported Tsinghua University, Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, Sanya Ecology and Environment Bureau, Institute of Pollution Control Technology on Solid Waste, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, The Society of Solid Waste of Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, Circular Economy Branch, Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, China Association of Environmental Protection Industry Solid Waste Treatment and Utilization Division, Sanya Federation of Academicians, Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific, Environment Management Professional Committee, Society of Management Sciences of China, Hainan University in co-organizing of the 18th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (2023 Global Waste Forum), held in Sanya, People's Republic of China from 20 to 23 May 2023.

The conference was organized as a pre-event of the upcoming UNCRD led “12th Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum in Asia and the Pacific”, which is scheduled to be held in 2024. UNCRD delivered a presentation on "Waste into Value ~ Implications of Circular Economy and UN SDGs” and chaired a parallel session at the conference. Furthermore, UNCRD co-organized and facilitated a Special Session of the International Partnership for Expanding Waste Management Services of Local Governments (IPLA) - a SDG partnership on 23 May 2023, addressing the role of 3R and circular economy towards achieving the SDGs. Approximately sixty participants from five countries comprising of academia, NGOs, government officials, private sectors, UN, and international organizations participated in this session. The session aimed to develop a global network dedicated to waste-related infrastructure and services, encourage the circular economy model, and exchange knowledge and outstanding practices in the field of 3R and circular economy.
