UNCRD-DSDG/ UN DESA, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan (MOEJ), co-organized the Regional Capacity Building Training Workshop for EST Member Countries on Implementation of, and Country Reporting on Aichi 2030 Declaration (2021-2030) at Asian Development Bank (ADB) Headquarters, Manila on 22-24 March 2023, with an objective to guide the EST participating countries in their efforts to implement and report on the implementation of the Aichi 2030 Declaration (2021-2023), which was agreed at the 14th Regional EST Forum in Asia (Oct’2021). Being aligned with the SDGs and the Paris Agreement on climate change, among others, the Aichi 2030 Declaration aims to act as a catalyst for transformational change in the transport sector in Asia. This includes enabling changes to policy, institutional frameworks, financing models, data management approaches, and the application of technology. Together they promote people-friendly and environmentally friendly transport infrastructure development in the transport sector of Asia.
The training workshop was attended by 63 participants (including 20 female participants) from 20 countries. The training workshop which also included several group exercises and presentations covered several areas such as Asian transport outlook covering knowledge management on transport data and transport policy in EST participating countries, roads safety policies and strategies, road and rail infrastructure for economic sustainability, national access, and connectivity urban and rural access, air pollution and climate change, international assistance on the implementation of the Aichi 2030 Declaration and annual country reporting guidelines. The training workshop facilitated exchange of best practices among participating countries in areas relevant to the implementation of six goals of the Aichi 2030 Declaration. UNCRD delivered opening remark, presentations and closing remark.
The training workshop further strengthened the cooperation and collaborative arrangements with Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Union of Railways (UIC), German Technical Cooperation (GIZ), Asian Infrastructure Development Bank (AIIB), UN ESCAP, among others, in EST areas.
The Ministry of Transport of the Government of Malaysia made an official announcement on hosting of the 15th Regional EST Forum in Asia in Kuala Lumpur from 24 to 26 October 2023.
