Third Training Workshop on Human Security and Regional Development with Focus on Risk Management and Climate Change for the Central Region of Argentina

2010/01/24

Date:  24 January 2010

Under UNCRD-LAC’s South-South Cooperation Programme, and in continuation of the training programme initiated in November 2007, UNCRD-LAC will implement the Third Training Workshop on Human Security and Regional Development with Focus on Risk Management and Climate Change for the Central Region of Argentina.

The Central Region of Argentina, comprising the provinces of Córdoba, Santa Fé, and Entre Ríos, has made advancement as an integrated region in the formulation of a Strategic Plan, and requested UNCRD-LAC’s support for the design and implementation of a Training Programme that emphasizes the Human Security approach to strengthen the capacities of public officials and members of civil society in the formulation of programmes and projects. Responding to this request, UNCRD implemented the first workshop in May 2008, and the second workshop in April 2009. Each had a different focus according to the needs expressed by the Central Region. This third workshop of the series was centered on risk management and climate change.

Main issues discussed were the urgent need to adopt regional measures to avoid, prevent or reduce the intensity of loss of native forest surfaces, preserve biodiversity, prevent floods and avoid rural migration. Discussions addressed the above important challenges recently faced by the Central Region, which require attention and incorporation in the strategic plan, and that are highly consistent with the thematic focus of the series of training activities held by UNCRD-LAC in the past two years. Attention was placed on: (a) the effects of natural phenomena in the sustainable development of the Region, and (b) the introduction of the territorial dimension of project formulation with a regional scope, highlighting risk management and climate change issues.
